Agios Spyridonas church, located behind Liston in the Old Town, is one of the most popular and most important attractions on the island.

Situated on Nikiforou Theotoki Street next to Nikiforou Theotoki Square is the impressive bell tower of the church that is dedicated to patron saint of Corfu which is recognizable at first glance as is one of the most characteristic sights on the island. The aisle and Ionian basilica once belonged to the Voulgari family who owned the relics of the Saint.

Today's church was built in 1589 and the exterior bears no relation to the byzantine architecture, but is reminiscent of churches in the west, specifically the church of Saint George in Venice, which was built during the same period.

You will be impressed with the stunning roof inside with its 17 brocaded panels depicting scenes of the life of Agios Spyridonas, copies of the original panels painted by Panayiotis Doxaras in 1727. Equally impressive are the frescoes in the church.
